How Difficult this is for Students

By Angela | February 18, 2008

I’m in the middle of applying for several scholarships and am realizing how difficult the whole process is for students.  Filling out the application can be tedious. Frequently, the standards for what a selection committee is looking for are vague. Essentially, it can be a guessing game to see what the judges want to read. I don’t think this is right.  Students should feel as if they can be 100% honest and be judged solely on their past accomplishments and future plans. I also don’t like that students are not notified in a timely manner whether or not they will be receiving a grant/honor/scholarship. Students who take the time to write their life story and send in recommendation letters deserve more than this. It is my hope that Students Serve has designed a better process.

I whole heartedly agree. I’m in the middle of applying for scholarships as well. I feel like I’m wasting my time applying for little scholarships here and there when there could be a million other students applying for the same thing. I wonder how I’m going to stand out in a sea of people, and I’m worried that I’ll get washed away. Seems like a impossible, hopeless, process that makes me feel really insignificant. “Apply for scholarships” answer to get money for school is much easier said then done.

Difficult isn’t the word. I am an adult student, i’m seven years removed from college and nine years removed from high school. I feel like I am throwing darts in hopes that some one will find pitty on me and offer me assistance. Not to mention that most scholarships are aimed towards high school students. Good luck to everyone.

I completly agree, I am paying to put myself through school with student loans (which do not cover all of my expenses) and everyone always says “Apply for some scholaships everyone can get money for school.” Really? I have applied for many scholarships and have never heard a word from anyone.
It is also difficult to write the best essay in the world when one is taking full time classes and in the midst of final exams.

I am a mother of two college students. My best advice for you is to apply for local scholarships from small service organizations. My son received a scholarship from our school districts education foundation and came close to receiving one from a local professional engineering club. Look for scholarships from the Kiwanis and Rotary in your home town. Don’t give up! I put myself through law school by working the whole time and taking less classes then going to school in the summer.
    Good luck!

You should never depend on scholarships. I applied for student loans to be assured I would have the money to make through school. I did finally get two local scholarships for about $15000 that really helped out. It is apparent that there is no accountability within the university scholarship programs. Scholarships are award using the personal agenda the reviewer.

Universities are out of control especially the fees and costs.
