THE STAFF OF STUDENTS SERVE

Angela C. Perkey, Founder and Executive Director

aperkey@studentsserve.org

Angela Perkey founded Students Serve after her freshman year at the College of William and Mary in 2006.  She noticed in her classes that she and her fellow students were studying persistent social problems but not doing anything to solve them.  Although professors challenged them to form viable solutions through innovative thinking, few students could use their ideas to improve the world due to lack of funding.  Because of this, she created Students Serve to provide grants that empower students across America to use their education to benefit communities.  She has written a chapter regarding the student’s perspective on service-learning in “Problematizing Service-Learning”, an academic book forthcoming September 2008.

In addition to graduating summa cum laude as a Monroe Scholar with Phi Beta Kappa honors from William and Mary in May 2008, she was chosen for the USA Today All-USA College Academic Team for her work with Students Serve. She has also received several awards for Best Delegate at Model United Nations competitions across the country and her team won first place at the international competition in Beijing. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, she anticipates starting her first ‘real’ job in August 2008 and will live in the Washington, D.C. area.

Thomas Comstock, Director of Web Campaign

Thomas, better known as Trey, is the second Texan on the team hailing from Houston, Texas, though he spent part of his childhood in Antwerp Belgium. He is a Government and Theatre double major at the College. Although it is early in his college career, Thomas has received the call to Christian ministry in the United Methodist church and plans to attend seminary after graduation in preparation for work, at least initially, as a Missionary. On campus, Thomas is involved in a number of organizations including being the Internal Communications Chair for the Methodist Campus Ministry the Wesley Foundations, Treasurer for a Classical Liberal political group the Society of John Locke, and being in charge of the Films committee of the University Center Activities Board. However, one of the more rewarding things that he does is working through Community Scholars program on a service learning project to research food distribution in Williamsburg and target specific groups that are being missed by the current infrastructure.

Kathryn A. Bowman, Director of Community Fundraising

Katy is from Austin, Texas, and is currently a junior at the College. She is a biology major and a religious studies minor, with aspirations of pursuing a career in medicine and biomedical research. She was drawn to work with Student Serve when she realized how few colleges across the nation offer student grants for independent service projects. Around campus, Katy is a member of several student organizations. She is vice president of the Brazilian jiu jitsu club, volunteers at a local hospital during the week, and is helping to organize the 2007 Alzheimer’s Memory Walk. She rides horses avidly and also enjoys hiking, kayaking, and reading in the sun.

Molly Sterlacci, Director of Public Relations

Molly is from Annandale, VA and is currently a sophomore at the College. She is a Government/Psychology double major with   the hope of working in International Affairs. She became interested in Students Serve after becoming involved with academic-service through a Hispanic Studies course that involved tutoring local Hispanic members of the community English. On campus, Molly is a member of the Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, a part of the Club Lacrosse team, InterVarsity Christian group, and a service trip to South Africa. She enjoys listening to music, warm weather, and shopping.

Anne Sprinkel, Director of Corporate Fundraising

asprinkel@studentsserve.org

Anne is in her senior year at W&M finishing up her major in Sociology.  Anne played for the varsity Women’s Soccer team for four years, studied abroad in Santiago, Chile, and has been with Students Serve for just one semester so far. Anne saw the student-run organization as a perfect way to gain insight and hands-on experience in the non-profit world in which she wishes to work.  While not coaching or playing soccer, Anne tends to slip out of the country into Central and South America, probably trying to surf on some beach, somewhere.

Kaitlyn Bayley, Student Grant Coordinator

kbayley@studentsserve.org

Kaitlyn is from Fairport, New York, and chose to major in American Studies at W&M.  This led to the decision to spend a semester with a service-learning program on an Indian reservation in South Dakota, which drove her to seek out ways to promote service-learning back in Williamsburg. Students Serve has proven to be the perfect way to do that, and she is enjoying working with the application process.

Kaitlyn is also a member of the women’s Ultimate Frisbee team at W&M, works part-time at Swem Library, and is a volunteer at the American Indian Resource Center in the Anthropology Department. She hopes to eventually enter the museum field and continue to advocate for awareness of Native American issues and promote service-learning.
